SOLV - Oregon Beach Clean-Up
Each year Local 315 rents a large, very comfortable air-conditioned bus that takes interested Mail Handlers and their families/friends to the Peter Iredale portion of the beautiful Oregon coast (north of Seaside) so that we can participate in helping to maintain the natural beauty of this amazing state by picking up trash and debris on the beach.
SOLV (Save Oregon from Litter and Vandalism) was founded by Oregon Governor Tom McCall and other prominent Oregonians in 1969. During the past forty years SOLV has expanded its volunteer base from 5,000 to 60,000 volunteers each year that visit and assist over 250 Oregon communities. SOLV is now considered the largest volunteer non-profit in the entire Pacific Northwest.
Each spring and fall volunteers from all part of Oregon converge on the beautiful Oregon coastline, some 427 miles, to pick up trash and debris along our beaches. Jack McGowan, Executive Director of SOLV for 18 years before he retired in 2008 was Local 315 'Citizen of the Year' in 2008. This annual award is given to worthy individuals and/or organizations that help uplift our communities and state.
Laurie Harms, Recording Secretary Local 315 continues to organize and lead our annual pilgrimage to the Peter Iredale portion of the Oregon coast. Food and drinks are provided. This is a wonderful way to 'give back' to our lovely state by working with all the other volunteers that take our tons of garbage and debris from our beaches.
If you wish to have additional information you can call the Union Office at (503) 234-6295 or 1-800-642-7315 or visit www.solv.org. You can become a SOLV member, offer your volunteer services or just visit the website to see what this great organization is doing to preserve the beauty of Oregon.
